Welcome to Hallstatt, Austria My first sight of Hallstatt was better than any photo I’d ever seen. This small town tucked between mountains and a clear lake, looks like it jumped straight out of a storybook. The buildings sit perfectly along the water’s edge, with colorful houses and pointed church spires that seem to touch the sky. Behind them, tall mountains create a stunning backdrop that changes with each season. Getting there is part of the fun.
We took a train that dropped us off at a small station across the lake. Then came the best part – a boat ride on the ferry called Stefanie. As we crossed the lake, we watched Hallstatt slowly come into view. The whole scene, with the town reflecting in the calm water, was simply breathtaking.
The town looks just like those miniature holiday villages people set up during Christmas but it’s real and full of life. Snow started falling heavily as we boarded the ferry named Stefanie. The snowfall was so thick that Hallstatt, the town across the lake, was barely visible through the white haze around the mountains. But then magical sights began to appear: first we spotted the tall church tower piercing the sky. Next, we saw lights twinkling on the lake’s surface.
The steep roofs of centuries-old houses were covered in fresh white snow. Best of all, beautiful white swans were swimming peacefully in the lake!
The island was the most beautiful place I had ever seen, and my eyes were glued to every detail. When our boat arrived at the dock, I waited until all other passengers left, taking photos and looking around in amazement – until the staff politely asked me to exit the boat. My friend and I put on our heavy backpacks and walked up the gravel path toward the small town. Every time we turned a corner we discovered an even more stunning view than before.
I felt so happy and excited. If I wasn’t carrying such a heavy backpack, I would have jumped and danced my way through the streets.

We resisted going into the tempting stores around the square which had signs advertising fresh gingerbread cookies & pine-flavored liquor. We returned later to try both treats, & they were tasty – giving us that perfect winter holiday feeling you’d expect in the mountains.
We walked for a few minutes in fresh snow, enjoying every step in this stunning town. Soon we reached our hotel called the Brau-Gasthof which is actually a brewery where people can also stay overnight. The building is incredibly old – it has been making beer for 700 years! We were so excited to sleep in such a historic place.
After putting our luggage in the hotel room, we felt relaxed & excited to go outside again. We wanted to see Hallstatt while it was snowing and the sun was going down. This turned out to be the best time to walk around the town because all the tourist groups had left for the day. The streets were peaceful and quiet with only a few other travelers like us who chose to spend the night in Hallstatt.

Walking through the door felt like traveling back in time – the restaurant looked exactly like it would have 700 years ago, with its old wooden beams and historic charm.
The old-style restaurant reminded me of dining in the past. We started with a simple but delicious soup – a clear broth with a crispy, cheese-filled dumpling floating in it. The dumpling soaked up the tasty soup making every bite perfect and comforting.
The Bräu-Gasthof inn in Hallstatt, Austria is a wonderful 700-year-old building that offers both comfort & amazing food. Despite its age, our room was warm and cozy, with modern heating that kept us snug while snow fell outside. Our room had two windows – one showing beautiful views of the lake & another opening onto a small balcony overlooking the street. From both windows, we could see snowy mountains and the pretty village of Hallstatt.
We think this inn is perfect for anyone visiting Hallstatt. It’s in a great spot, serves tasty food, has comfortable rooms, and offers stunning views of the surroundings. You can easily check room prices online for your travel dates. If you prefer to rent an apartment instead options are limited because Hallstatt is quite small. However, we found a lovely apartment where the owners live upstairs with their friendly dog and cats – perfect if you miss having pets while on vacation!
