Austria & Switzerland Tour Packages — The Ultimate Alpine Double

Austria and Switzerland. Two nations. One extraordinary Alpine landscape. Between them, they contain some of the most celebrated scenery, most beautifully preserved historic cities, and most compelling cultural heritage in the entire world. Combining both countries in a single tour is not just possible — it is one of the most rewarding things you can do in European travel.

NextView Tours operates Austria and Switzerland tours that take you from Vienna’s imperial boulevards through the UNESCO lakeside beauty of Hallstatt, across the medieval splendour of Salzburg, into the dramatic Tyrolean Alps around Innsbruck, and onward through Switzerland’s extraordinary landscape of lakes, peaks, and perfectly preserved medieval cities — Lucerne, Interlaken, Bern, and Zurich.

We offer two Austria-Switzerland tour packages — an 11-day comprehensive journey and a 15-day grand tour that extends into neighbouring countries. Both are fully guided, with premium accommodation included at every stop.

Austria vs Switzerland — What's Different, What's Similar

The Similarities

Both countries occupy the central Alpine arc — sharing the same dramatic mountain scenery, the same clear-aired freshness, the same culture of precision engineering, excellent public transport, and remarkable culinary tradition. Both speak German as a primary language (alongside French and Italian in parts of Switzerland) and share the Alpine cultural heritage of fondue, schnitzel, coffee culture, and spectacular winter sports.

The Differences

Austria is slightly warmer in character — more immediately welcoming, with Vienna’s grand imperial heritage adding a Baroque richness to the Austrian identity that Switzerland’s more restrained Protestant tradition does not share. Switzerland’s mountain scenery, particularly around the Bernese Oberland and the Valais, is arguably even more dramatic than Austria’s. Swiss cities — Lucerne, Bern, Zurich — are extraordinarily clean, efficient, and beautiful. Austrian cities — Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck — feel warmer, more lived-in, and culturally richer in the arts.

Combining both countries in one tour gives you the best of everything: Austria’s warmth and cultural depth, Switzerland’s jaw-dropping Alpine drama and perfectly preserved medieval cities.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year for an Austria and Switzerland tour?

June through September offers the best weather and longest daylight hours. May is beautiful with spring flowers and fewer crowds. October brings spectacular autumn foliage, particularly in Switzerland. Winter departures (November–March) are available for those wanting snow-covered scenery, though some mountain excursions may be weather-dependent.

Is the Austria & Switzerland 11-day tour suitable for older travellers?

Yes — our tours are designed for all ages and reasonable fitness levels. The majority of travel is by comfortable coach. City walks are at a gentle pace on mostly flat terrain. Optional mountain excursions (cable cars, rack railways) require minimal physical exertion. Please inform us of any specific needs and we will advise accordingly.

Do I need a Swiss visa for the Austria-Switzerland tour?

EU/EEA citizens can travel freely between Austria and Switzerland. UK citizens can visit Switzerland for up to 90 days without a visa. Non-EU/EEA travellers should check Swiss visa requirements in advance of booking. Your Austrian Schengen visa does not automatically cover Switzerland (which is not an EU member, though it participates in Schengen).

Can I fly into Zurich and start the tour there instead of Vienna?

Our standard departure is from Vienna, which allows for the natural eastward-to-westward Alpine arc. However, for private groups, we can customise the starting and ending points. Contact us to discuss custom routing options.
